My Life as a Telemarketer

[My Experience] I used to be that telemarketer that called your house!

My career as a Telemarketer has affected every job I’ve had since.

People always had suggested me to remove my telemarketing job experience from my resume, LinkedIn, and other online profiles.

But they don’t understand the things that I’ve learned during this phase of life.

While it is true, I used to phone a lot of people. I also spend a great deal of time sitting and staring at a screen of never-ending numbers.

Sometimes I was overwhelmed by the amount I had to call.

Working as a telemarketer can be a roller coaster ride. There are times when things are upbeat and smooth, while sometimes, it’s a trudge in the mud.

It all depends actually on how you approach your customer and how the customer receives you.

It is essential, however, to know that despite the negative reception of your customer, you need to remain patient and keep your voice in a calm and inviting manner.

It all boils down to being professional in the end.

People are just people!

I had worked for outbound sale process for Citibank credit cards, Bajaj Alliance, and Tata AIG general insurances.

After a year or so, I was part of a team named ‘The Shooters’; a group focused and generating the highest sale on the entire floor.

I was also able to get on the top 3 sale achiever for a month, and a small blurred photo was pinned on the floorboard.

I remember asking my team leader after that, “If we were the top-performing team, why do we have different teams working on the same floor?”

He replied, “Sam, I know you guys will be doing good most of the times, but there are day’s where we will struggle to achieve the daily targets.

This is where I’ve to look at a bigger picture, and for me, every team is the same, as luck can change for anyone. My work is to motivate and get the best out of each one working here.”

As it is with any job, it is the people you work with that make or break it. A good team makes for happy people, and let’s face it a more comfortable life.

There is always that feeling of a team effort, we all pull together and help get the job done!

I don’t know why people had so much bad point of view for tele jobs; every office job has its pros and cons.

I have seen many people who are interested and willing to take the initiative to grow into a great supervisor and manager positions.

I mean I had got into telesales to support myself and family during the downfall. I don’t think it would be easy to get a job for a college dropout quickly.

I one thing I’m proud of is I landed most of my jobs on my own without any referrals or going to friends/family for help.

Let’s look at the negative side of it too — it can be very emotionally draining, unhealthy day to day routine, most of us get the habits into smoking (just of any specific point) and most importantly “THE BAMBOO SESSION TIME” — end of the day there would be review meeting where we would be analyzing & discussing the new strategy .

I had a blast of fun and so many memories during the period. Met so many beautiful people and got their perspective on life.

Most of us choose our first jobs without any clue of what work life is all about and without considering our long-term goals.

If you are not sure of what exactly you would like to do, assess your skills to see what suits you at this stage.

While a career change may turn out to be a good thing, in the end, it often requires a great deal of sacrifice.

Remember: Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

“Started from the bottom, now we’re here.”
